In my crafting life, August is also often a "break" month. That's not to say there isn't crafting in August, but a number of on-going craft-alongs take the month off; Sock Knitters Anonymous, for instance, takes August to clear their needles, and the House Cup has a break between terms that happens to fall in August. This year, my summer-long spinning class that I've been taking every weekend since May concludes with the first Saturday of August, so I'll be able to work my way slowly through the backlog of spinning that has accumulated, and even get something on the wheel that's completely of my choosing...
So, here we are, in the first week of August, and here's my list.
2014 Works in Progress - On the Needles
i. ONE more handspun project
1. Alpaca Hap (a long-term Unfinished Object, my 2014 goal is the center squares)
2. Celestarium chuppa - FO!
3. Dusk into Twilight (finally a tricolor shawl!)
4. Straboy (in the swatching stage)
5. Bel Air (this may morph into an entirely different blue henley)
+ 7. handspun comfort socks
8. ... handspun...
I started a pair of (mostly) plain socks from handspun when I got back into the commuting life; as simple as my tri-colored shawl is, it's not exactly train-friendly. I've reached the heel of the first sock and stalled; I need to sit down, decide which heel I'm using, knock it out, and then these socks will continue being my go-to on-the-go knitting. I also decided to sample an upcoming handspun project-- not just make a small skein, but knit it up, too! Maybe it's a sudden sign of maturity (I did just have a birthday) but probably it's a reaction to spinning up one of my all-time favorite fibers that I can't get more of.
2014 Works in Progress - On the Loom
i. Four finished objects
1. Alpaca Rectangle - FO!
2. Llama/Silk Scarf
+ 3. Dad's Alpaca Scarf (queued!)
I've been mulling over weaving quite a bit recently-- I checked out a lot of books at the library and realized that my vocabulary is really basic when it comes to this particular craft. But, even though it's slow going, I think I've come up with a plan for Dad's scarf. Now I just have to finish what's on the loom, and maybe take a quick lesson on how to warp more efficiently.

As a birthday treat I started spinning something just for me, not for class, which means most of the homework for this week ended up on this list, instead of getting finished. But I'm enjoying my birthday spinning, so I've decided to embrace my delinquency. Also, the sample I'm knitting up was spun on a spindle this summer, but I think I'm going to spin the rest of the pound on my wheel-- I think I'll get a more consistent yarn, and I kind of want the speed the wheel will give me for this one.
